Hackatao is the collaborative artist identity of Nadia Squarci and Sergio Scalet.1 In a 2020 Museum of Contemporary Digital Art interview, they explained that the name combines a drive to uncover what lies beneath appearances with the Taoist idea of complementary creative balance.1 They choose each work’s theme together; Scalet handles intricate drawing, while Squarci defines boundaries and adds layers of colour.1 Their process can move from hand-modelled sculpture or canvas through photography and digital elaboration to animation or augmented reality, joining physical and digital forms.1 MoCDA included Hackatao in Digital Bodies, its 2020 online exhibition with the DSL Collection for CADAF, devoted to changing representations of the body across physical and digital media.2

Replying to a critic on X in September 2024, Hackatao wrote of an early acquisition made “years ago, for a few dollars” that “despite many million dollar offers we have never sold it and probably never will”, adding that the same was true of the duo’s XCOPY.3
